Of the nation’s living veterans, roughly 2 million are women. This book honors their many stories.



Bicentennial Baby is a coming-of-age memoir about survival and reinvention—how serving in the Army helped me make peace with my family’s unspeakable past. A different kind of military memoir, this is not about war or combat. It is an intimate look at the experiences all women carry—and what draws some women to military service. In addition to the pursuit of truth and belonging, this story explores what it means for a woman to own her body and her life. The military is the backdrop, but the battles are personal.
